Obituary

Mary D. Becker, age 89, of Huron, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Avantara Huron in Huron. Her private funeral service will be held on Wednesday with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Huron. Her visitation, with family present, will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 5-7 PM at Welter Funeral Home in Huron.

Mary Donna Becker was born on November 3, 1931 to parents Leonard and Lillian Brown in Washobaugh County south of Wanblee, South Dakota. Mary grew up there for several years and then moved to Mt. Vernon where her parents farmed for several years. Mary attended school in Mt. Vernon, graduating from high school in 1949. She then attended Miltonvale Wesleyan College for a year where she met her future husband, Wilbert Becker.

Mary married Wilbert on January 31, 1951 in Mt. Vernon. When Wilbert graduated college, he worked for two big wheat farmers, one in Oklahoma and one in Kansas. The couple then moved to Huron, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Mary worked at several jobs in downtown Huron and then worked 37 years in the food service at Huron College. Mary and Wilbert were very active in their church, teaching, music, on the church board and wherever else help was needed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilbert in 2001; great-granddaughter, Dacotah Jean Kouf; three brothers, Bill Brown, Hap Brown, and Ron Brown; several brothers and sisters-in-law and other family members.

She is survived by her children, Jon (Kathie Erdman) Becker of Flandreau and Deborah (Steve) Anderson of Huron; grandchildren, Marshall (Angie) Kouf and Dustin (Tiffanie) Kouf; great-grandkids, Dillon Kouf, Delaney Kouf, and Dixon Kouf; step-grandchildren, Steven Lee Anderson, Scott Anderson, Stacey Anderson, Josh Erdman, April (Josh) Long, and Ashley Erdman; step great-grandchildren, Hailey Anderson, Everett Anderson, and Estella Long; extended  family, Kathy and Virg Donaldson and Wade and Janeen Kouf; five sisters-in-law, Maxine Brown, Bev Brown, Linda Brown, Jan Becker, and Carol Campbell.
