Marvin F. White, age 89, of 420 21st St. SW, in Huron, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at StoneyBrook Suites in Huron. His funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron with Rev. Kevin Channel and Rev. Dr. William Pfautz officiating. Burial will be at the Wessington Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council and Masonic Rites by the Wessington Masonic Lodge #107 A.F. & A.M. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Tuesday morning. The family will be present from 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Marvin F. White was born on May 7, 1915, to Roy and Ernestine Tena (Wahlert) White near Wessington, SD. He was raised on the family farm, attended Whiteside Consolidated School, and graduated from Wessington High School in 1933. After attending Southern Normal School in Springfield, SD, he taught in a rural school for three years. On June 25, 1941, Marvin married Gertrude Galbreath in a secret ceremony. Later, when he took a job in Omaha, NE, at a bomber plant, they announced their marriage. In 1942, Marvin was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Forces where he was a flight instructor teaching at air bases in Mississippi, Nebraska, and Illinois. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, after four years of service, he returned to Wessington. He attended Northern State College at Aberdeen where he received his Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Education. He taught school at Wessington until 1960 when he moved his family to Huron, where he taught at Huron Junior High School for twenty years. After his retirement in 1980, Marvin and Gertrude traveled to all fifty states and Canada. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Huron, Wessington Masonic Lodge #107 A.F. & A.M. for 57 years, William-Reaves American Legion Post #7 of Huron, Huron Area Senior Center, and Lions Club of Huron. He loved music and he especially enjoyed playing the violin. He is survived by 1 son, Larry (Luanna) White of Madison, SD; 1 daughter, Mary Ann (Harry) Fritz of Cheyenne, WY; 4 grandchildren, Cass (Michele) White, Lori White, Jennifer Fritz, and John Fritz. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude on May 5, 1995; 1 brother, Alvin White on October 2, 2002; and a granddaughter in infancy.
