Obituary

Marvin G. Tompkins, age 80, of Huron, passed away peacefully following a brief illness with cancer on Monday, August 14, 2017 at his residence. His funeral service will be 10:30 am on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Mt. Olivet Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, August 16th followed by a prayer service and time of sharing beginning at 7pm the Welter Funeral Home; or visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Marvin was born November 14, 1936 on the family farm near Carthage, SD to Bert and Mable (McLain) Tompkins.  He attended school in Carthage, SD then helped on the family farm.

On April 12, 1957, he married Sidney (Hosmer) Tompkins at Artesian, SD.  They made their home in Sioux City, IA.  In 1959, they moved to Fedora where they owned and operated the "Green Door."  In 1963, they moved to Mitchell where Marv worked for Berg Appliance as a service man.  In 1964, they finally settled in Huron where he managed - and later purchased - the Huron branch now known as Marv's Appliance.  To this marriage, 5 children were born.

In 1999, Marvin married Krista Alvarado at their home in Huron.  Marv owned and operated Marv's Appliance for nearly 50 years.  Marvin had a zest for life and lived life to the fullest.  Known to many as "The Potscrubber" and "Tompkins Guide Service," Marv spent his weekends most of his adult life at the Missouri River where he did his part in minimizing the walleye population.  Marv also loved the Black Hills where he hunted and enjoyed the outdoors - especially at the "Moon Cabin."  Marvin worked hard his whole life and as he faced his illness with dignity, instructed his family to "make sure you stop and smell the roses."

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Krista; his children Mike (Rhonda) Tompkins of St. Lawrence, David (Doris) Tompkins of Huron, Lori (Jeff) Gottbreht of Lincoln, NE, Lisa (Glenn) Overbay of Huron, Shon (Candy) Alvarado of Harrisburg, and Stacy (Bobby) Eichhorn of Sioux Falls;  one daughter-in-law, Cindy Tompkins of Huron; his grandchildren, Missy Tompkins, Cassie (Corey) Heise, Tyrell Tompkins, Seth, Kylie, & Sidney Overbay, Hope & Luke Mehlhaff, Deric & Daxton Diede, Avery & Alexa Alvarado, and Miranda Boster ("The Runt").  His Great Grandchildren, Braelyn Tompkins, Carter & Peighton Tompkins, Rilynn Heise, & Ka'myah Bass.  Siblings, Rod (Carol) Tompkins, Beverly Kempf both of Huron, Linda Zavitz of Green Valley, AZ, and Charlotte (Dan) Leonard of Shawnee, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Bert & Mable; a son, Doug "Boogs", a brother, Irvin, his brother-in-law, Paul Kempf, his mother-in-law, Carolyn Styer and father-in-law William Styer.
