Marvin Knutson, age 85, of Huron, died Thursday, November 27, 2014 at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. A funeral celebrating his life will be 10:30 am Monday, December 1, 2014 at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery including military honors by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation with family present will be 6-8 pm Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Welter Funeral Home with a 7:00 pm prayer service; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Marvin Luvern Knutson was born near Woonsocket on July 5, 1929, to Andrew and Clara (Olson) Knutson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school and graduated from eighth grade in Forestburg. He farmed with his dad and helped area farmers for several years. In October 1951, Marv was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps, and served mainly at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro. He spent one year in Korea during the Korean War. He earned the rank of Sargent in the First Marine Air Wing and received his honorable discharge in October of 1953. Marv married Shirley Hansen on May 15, 1955 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural Woonsocket. They lived their first year in Woonsocket and the rest of their time together in Huron. He worked for the W Easland Firm in Woonsocket for a year. When the couple moved to Huron, Marv started his 32 year career at Northwestern Public Service. He retired as the Gas Meter Shop Foreman in 1988. Marv was a member of American Lutheran Church, American Legion William Reaves Post #7, VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776, RSVP, and the Beadle Bums Sam's Club. Marv enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and taking bus tours. The couple spent 3 months in Arizona every winter for 11 years. Marv also liked to collect eagle figurines and collectables. Marv is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley Knutson of Huron; two daughters, Robin and Lori Knutson of Huron; a sister, Arlis Hetland of Mitchell; a sister-in-law, Jean Knutson of Billings, MT; and many nieces and nephews. Marv was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harold (Ella) Knutson, Leonard Knutson, and infant Marston Knutson; three sisters, Iola (Robert) Goudy, Burdette (Charles) Spelbring, and Shirley Knutson; brother-in-law, Robert Hetland; three nephews and one niece.
