Marlys Engel, age 69, of 1367 2nd St. SW, Huron, died Thursday, January 4, 2007, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Monday at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday morning. There will be a Prayer Service at 6:00 PM Sunday evening at the funeral home with the family present from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Marlys Engel was born Marlys Mae DePauw on April 1, 1937, to Albert and Lorraine (Irwin) DePauw at Luverne, MN. She grew up in Luverne and graduated from Luverne High School in 1955. Following graduation she moved to Sioux Falls and worked as a nurses aide at Sioux Valley Hospital. On February 16, 1957, Marlys married Don Engel at Sioux Falls. The couple moved to Huron where they have lived since that time. For a few years Marlys worked as a housekeeper in various homes in Huron. In 1968 they purchased Dons APCO where Marlys worked along with Don in all aspects of the business. In 1979 they purchased, in partnership, Fair City Lanes. In 1985, Don and Marlys became the sole owners of Fair City Lanes. Beginning in 1972 through the present, Marlys was actively involved in coaching the Youth Bowling Leagues. In April of 1995 Marlys was inducted into the South Dakota Womens Bowling Association Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service; in June of 1995, Marlys was named the Coach of the Year by the South Dakota Bowling Association; in 2005 Marlys received the Huron Womens Bowling Association Sportsmanship Award. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church, Huron Youth Bowling Board Member; Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776 Auxiliary, WIBC lifetime member for 45 years at the state and national level, and had received numerous bowling awards and certificates for her bowling ability. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, yard work, and being outdoors. She is survived by her husband, Don of Huron; 1 son, Bruce Engel of Huron; 2 daughters, ReVay (LeRon) DeVries of Corsica, and Julie (Dave) Johnson of Huron; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer (Bryce) Pietzyk, Derek Engel, Toni (Ross) King, Teresa DeVries, Toby DeVries, Brandi Johnson, and Bo Johnson; 1 great granddaughter, Anissa Pietzyk; 8 brothers, Dale (Arlene) of Rapid City, Keith (Dorla) of Sioux Falls, Darrell Butch (Barb) DePauw of Huron, Dean (Caryn) of Sun Prairie, WI, Dennis (Julia) of Bryceville, FL, Burdette (Maxine) of Gurnee, IL, Delbert of Luverne, MN, and Albert (Joyce) of Sioux Falls; 4 sisters, Delores Kasemodel of Merrimac, WI, Eileen Roemling of Sioux Falls, Carol (Charlie) Henderson of Worthington, MN, and Sheila (Steve) Kleuver of Worthington, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 brother-in-law, Delmar Kasemodel; and 3 sisters-in-law, Reva DePauw, Yvonne DePauw, and Carol DePauw.
