Marlys Anne Diegel, age 75, of Wolsey, SD, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron, SD. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wolsey, SD, with burial at 1:15 p.m. at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Huron. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with the family present from 6-8 p.m., and a prayer service to begin at 7:30 p.m.; or visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Marlys Anne Parkhurst, the daughter of Lyman and Martha (Sexton) Parkhurst, was born on July 21, 1937 in Huron, SD. Marlys graduated from Iroquois High School in 1955 and from Huron College with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Marlys married Ervin Diegel on August 8, 1959 in Iroquois, SD. Marlys taught at schools in Orient, Milbank, Bonilla, Hitchcock and Oldham, SD. In 1967, the couple moved to Wolsey, SD where Marlys taught for 32 years. She retired in 1999 but continued substituting for the Wolsey area schools. Marlys was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Wolsey and served as clerk of session for 20 years. She was also a member of the Wolsey Senior Center and site council, the Huron Retired Teachers, Wolsey Lions, and Onward Wolsey. Marlys served as an officer of the Strikette Bowling League and captain of her team for many years. Marlys also coached grade school basketball, track and field, the girls' softball team, and the boys' baseball teams for many years. After Marlys' retirement, she was elected to the School Board, serving for four years. Marlys enjoyed reading, camping, and going to coffee with the ladies. She was also a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings. Marlys enjoyed her grandchildren immensely and loved to spend time with them. Grateful for having shared in Marlys' life are her son, Rick (Paula) Diegel of Edgeley, ND; 3 grandchildren: Brittany, Beau, and Trey Diegel all of Edgeley, ND; three brothers, Derald Parkhurst (Vicki) and Roger (Lynn) Parkhurst, both of New Jersey, and Dale Parkhurst (Anthony) of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Marian (Don) Rydbom of Alexandria, SD and Diane (LeRoy) Jager of Alpena, SD; and several nieces and nephews. Marlys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin in 2010; and brother, Dennis Parkhurst.
