Obituary

Marie Malone, age 89, of Huron, SD, died Sunday, September 26, 2010, at Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., October 1, at First United Methodist Church with burial at Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Friday afternoon one hour prior to the service.

Marie Malone was born Marie Florence Marshall, daughter of Herbert R. and Mary (Payne) Marshall, on May 12, 1921, on the family farm in rural Hitchcock, SD. She was the 8th of 14 children in the family. After graduating from Hitchcock High School in 1939, she moved to Minneapolis where she worked as a housekeeper and nanny.

Marie and Bill Franklin were married on February 8, 1941. Following that they lived and farmed in rural Wessington.

Marie married George Hart in 1956; they lived in Huron until his death a few years later.

Throughout her career, Marie worked in various food service positions including starting and operating the E & M Caf in Iroquois, SD after her marriage to Everett Malone in 1964. At the same time they began developing a small farming operation near Iroquois which they expanded and moved to few years later.

After Everetts death in 1987, Marie moved to Huron where she continued working in insurance sales, primarily with Combined Insurance and Farm Bureau Insurance. At the end of her working career, Marie was employed as a hostess at the Pizza Ranch in Huron.

Marie was a past member of the Wessington First Presbyterian Church and the Huron Moose Lodge. Her many interests included bowling, fishing, traveling and gardening.

She is survived by 1 daughter, Judith (David) Peters of Newport, NC; 1 son, Cleo (Judith) Franklin of Burnsville, MN; 8 grandchildren, Deborah Peters and her husband Michael Femia, Teresa Peters and her husband Gary Klee, Matthew Peters and his wife Anya, Theodore Peters and his wife Kimberly, Aaron Franklin and his wife Taera, Lisa Fujii and her husband Nobu, Elizabeth Franklin, and Catherine Franklin; 11 great grandchildren, Dominic Femia, Judith Femia, Clara Femia, Marshall Klee, David Klee, Henry Klee, Daniel Peters, Caroline Peters, Andrew Peters, Nathan Peters, and Emily Peters; 2 sisters, Reva Maher of Pierre, SD, and Lenore Schamp of Sioux Falls, SD; 1 brother, Glen (Maxine) Marshall of Hitchcock, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 husbands, George Hart and Everett Malone; 1 son, Wayne Franklin; 4 sisters, Vera Woodard, Ellen Landeidel, Norma Maher, and Jessie Houck; and 6 brothers, Lawrence, Carl, Clyde, Keith, Lester and his twin Lyle.
