Marie Berquist, age 97, of Huron, SD, died Monday, July 15, 2013, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron, SD. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 19, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Thursday, July 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Marie Berquist was born Marie Anna Schroeder, daughter of John and Margaret (Harmdierks) Schroeder, on April 16, 1916, in Red Elm, SD. As a child she moved with her parents to a farmstead south of Huron in Beadle County and attended country school. On June 23, 1940, Marie married Basil Berquist in Huron. Marie has made Huron her home to the present time. Marie worked in the coffee shop at Marvin Hughitt Hotel, and also did domestic work for families in the Huron area. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church; and an honorary member of Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Her many interests included sewing crocheting, traveling, and reading. She is survived by 1 daughter, Karen Johnston of Council Bluffs, IA; 2 grandchildren, Tina Hofwalt, and Jason (Angela) Johnston; 4 great grandchildren, Allan Hofwalt, Dylan Hofwalt, Sean Hofwalt, and Noah Johnston; 1 sister, Esther (Alvin) Halbur of Huron; 1 sister-in-law, Betty Schroeder of Huron; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Basil on May 17, 2008; 2 brothers, Herman (Doris) Schroeder, and Raymond Schroeder.
