Margaret Ann Long, daughter of Peter and Minnie (Frank) Long, was born on May 3, 1909, in Van Wert OH. When she was 3 years old she moved with her family to Huron, where she attended school and graduated from Huron High School in 1927.
After receiving her teaching certificate, Margaret began her 38-year teaching/education career in 1934, beginning as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse near Huron. In 1942, she became Superintendent of Schools for Beadle County, a position she held until her retirement in 1972.
The house that her family moved to on Utah Avenue when Margaret was 3-years old, is the same house that she lived in for her entire life until moving to Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in October of 2001.
In her later years while living at the nursing home, Margaret would always ask, where are all of my children? Margaret has now found her children and she will be with them forever!
She was a member of American Lutheran Church; Mizpah Order of the Eastern Star; Y.W.C.A.; Delta Kappa Gamma; life-member of the Huron Area Senior Center; Y.W.C.A.; and a life-member of S.D.E.A. (South Dakota Education Association). After her retirement she was very active as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and Huron pre-school.
She is survived by 1 nephew, Robert (Dawn) Long of Santa Rosa, CA; 1 niece, Paulette Gilmer of Loveland, CO; and several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 brother, Howard Long; and 1 niece, Gaynel McCready.
