Margaret Marge Herriot, age 85, of 1336 Frank Ave. SE, Huron, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 5, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be on Thursday, April 6, at 2:00 PM MDT at Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis. Friends may call Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Wednesday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Margaret Herriot was born Margaret Isabel Hampton on July 13, 1920, to Gordon and Artie (Bendorf) Hampton at rural Wessington Springs, SD. As a young girl she moved with her parents to Huron where she attended school through her junior year of high school. She moved to Hitchcock where she lived with her older sister while attending her senior year of high school and graduated in 1937 from Hitchcock High School. She then attended Spearfish Teachers College and graduated with a Teaching Certificate in 1938. She moved to Red Owl, SD, where she taught for 1 year. She continued teaching in rural schools for the next few years. She continued her education over the following years and graduated from Huron College in 1968 with a B.A. Degree in Education. On July 12, 1942, Marge married Walter Herriot at Winona, MN. During the years of World War II, her husband, Walter, was in the U.S. Navy and Marge moved to various military stations with him. She held various jobs during this time, one of which was working for the British Consulate in Washington, DC. She also worked as a nurses aid. Upon Walters discharge in late 1945, the couple returned to Huron. Over the next several years Marge taught at Wolsey, Hitchcock, Cavour, and Iroquois. In 1967, they moved to Winner, SD, where Marge resumed teaching. After her retirement in 1972, they moved to Centerville, SD; in 1974, returned to Huron; in 1978 to Lincoln City, OR; in 1982 to Salem, OR; in 1999 to Mesa, AZ; and returned to Huron in October of 2005. She is survived by her husband, Walter of Huron; 2 daughters, Cheryl (Don) Nelson of Show Low, AZ, and Cathy (George) Williams of Cold Water, MI; 4 grandchildren, Scott Nelson, Amy Nelson, Adam Williams, and Lyndsay Williams; 4 great grandchildren, Kyle Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Trevor Nelson, and Joshua Nelson; 1 brother, Donald (Eunice) Hampton of Huron; 2 sisters, Mildred Christman of Redfield, SD, and Doris McNutt of Portland, OR. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 sisters, Belva Grady, Geneva Olerich, and Verla Jones; 1 brother, Lloyd Hampton; 1 sister-in-law, Martha Hampton; and 4 brothers-in-law, Ernest Olerich, Emil Jones, Jake Christman, and Keith McNutt.
