Obituary

Mardine Mitzel, age 73, of Knoxville, TN, and formerly of 655 3rd St. SE, Huron, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at St. Marys Medical Center at Knoxville. Her funeral mass will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 15, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Donald Imming officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Saturday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM Friday evening at the funeral home followed by a Catholic Daughters of the Americas Rosary. Mardine Mitzel was born Mardine J. Crogan on November 8, 1931, to Alfred and Olga (Carlson) Crogan, Sr., at Aberdeen, SD. She attended elementary and high school at Sacred Heart Catholic School at Aberdeen. On July 12, 1948, Mardine married Richard Mitzel at Aberdeen. The couple lived at Mansfield and Lake Preston prior to moving to Huron in 1952. She owned and operated the D & M Restaurant, worked at Curr Lockers, Leftys Liquors, and Armour & Company, all in Huron. Her husband, Richard, died on March 13, 1992. She later moved to Mississippi and to Knoxville, TN, in 2002. She was a former member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish attending St. Martin Catholic Church, Altar Society, Moose Lodge, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and VFW Auxiliary. Family was all important to Mardine and her life was centered on the their lives and activities. Her many interests included crocheting, dancing, playing cards, and traveling to visit members of her family. She is survived by 3 sons, James (Voncile) Mitzel of Corryton, TN, Robert (Marilyn) Mitzel of Yale, and Thomas Mitzel of Wayne, NE; 3 daughters, Vickie Mitzel of Huron, Karen (Tony) Brodersen of Wolsey, and Theresa (Joel) Horn of Huron; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 1 sister-in-law, Elizabeth Crogan of Aberdeen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; 1 granddaughter, Kelli Fordham; and 2 brothers, Roy Crogan, and Alfred Crogan, Jr.
