Obituary

Madeleine Rogers, age 66, of rural Wessington, died Friday, December 2, 2005, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 6, at St. Johns Lutheran Church at Wolsey with Rev. Michael Bagnall officiating. Burial will be at the Wessington Cemetery. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Tuesday morning. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home with the family present from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. Madeleine Rogers was born Madeleine Letsche on June 17, 1939, to Erwin and Irma (Osterlo) Letsche at the Wessington Hospital. She attended Rowen School south of Vayland and graduated from Wessington High School in 1957. On May 19, 1957, Madeleine married Donald Rogers at Concordia Lutheran Church in Wessington. She attended Huron College and at the age of 19 began teaching in country schools in Beadle County. She taught school at Schoffield Barracks in Oahu, HI. She began teaching in the Wessington Elementary School in 1961 and retired there in 2004, after 45 years of teaching. She continued her education and after 12 years of night classes and summer school she earned her B.S. degree from Huron College. She was fiercely loyal to her family, her church, and her community. She was an active participant and promoter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Concordia Lutheran Church, Lutheran Womens Missionary League, Wessington Development Corporation, Thrivent, SDEA, PTO, Sunshine Mixers Extension Club, 4-H, American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Games, Huron Senior Citizen Line Dancers, and the Senior Games for many years until her health failed. Her love of reading spread beyond her classrooms into the public library where she was a story hour reader. She played the organ and taught Sunday School at her church for over 50 years. She was a lifetime promoter of health and physical fitness, teaching swimming, aerobics and line dancing to many people. She was instrumental in bringing girls sports to Wessington School in the 1960s. She is survived by her husband, Donald of rural Wessington; 3 sons, Dana (Michelle) Rogers of Box Elder, SD, Chris (Stacey) Rogers of Sioux Falls, and Evan (Jennifer) Rogers of Sioux Falls; 1 daughter Kari (Chad) Sargent of White Bear Lake, MN; 5 grandchildren, Mikayla Rogers of Gulf Port, MS, Cole Kosmala of Box Elder, Cole Sargent of White Bear Lake, MN, Brooke Sargent of White Bear Lake, MN, and Ethan Crites of Sioux Falls; 3 brothers, Travis (Beverly) Letsche of St. Lawrence, SD, Dennis (Mary Ellen) Letsche of Miller, and Curtis (Pam) Letsche of Stewartville, MN; 2 sisters, Jill (Jim) Johnsen of Wessington, Lark (Bill) Bennett of Hill City, SD; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and 1 niece, Teresa Letsche.
