Mable Tompkins, age 93, of 1043 Ohio Ave SW, Huron, died Thursday, November 22, 2007, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, November 26, at the Welter Funeral Home with Pastor Marion Cain officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery at Carthage. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday at the Welter Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM and the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Mable Tompkins was born Mable M. McLain on May 23, 1914, to Harry and Ethel (Burress) McLain in Milbank, SD. At the age of 6 she moved with her family to Carthage, SD, where she grew up, received her education, and graduated from Carthage High School in 1932. On December 1, 1933, Mable married Burtis Bert Tompkins. The couple remained in the Carthage community until 1961 when they moved to St. Charles, IL. While there Mable worked at the local hospital. In 1972, they moved to Huron where she has lived since that time. She was a past member of the Carthage Birthday Club. Her interests included canning, cooking, baking, traveling, and going for scenic rides. She is survived by 6 children, Irvin Tompkins of Huron, Marvin (Krista) Tompkins of Huron, Rodney (Carol) Tompkins of Huron, Beverly (Paul) Kempf of Huron, Linda Zavitz of Green Valley, AZ, and Charlotte (Daniel) Leonard of Lawrence, KS; 20 grandchildren, Dan (Kathy) Kempf, Ken (Nancy) Kempf, Kathe Kempf, Jean (Jared) Gross, Curt (Becky) Kempf, Barb (Mark) Glanzer, Sue (Mike) Paye, Patricia (Adam) Steiner, Jeff (Amy) Kempf, Mike Tompkins, David Tompkins, Doug Tompkins, Lori (Jeff) Gottbreht, Lisa (Glenn) Overbay, Michelle (Timothy) Duman, Meggan Leonard, Steven Tompkins, Teri (Tim) Shelton, Tim Tompkins, and Sandy Tompkins; 21 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Bert, on June 5, 1976.
