Mabel Van Heel, age 101, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron, died Friday, March 12, 2004 at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Monday, March 15th at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Her Committal Service will be at 2:30 PM Monday afternoon at the Buffalo Lake Cemetery at Eden, SD. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday morning. Mabel Van Heel was born Mabel Louise Peterson on September 3, 1902, to John A. and Rosetta (Gilbertson) Peterson in Marshall County near Eden, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church. She attended rural Marshall County Schools. In March 1921, Mabel married Harold Warring in Sisseton, SD and they lived in the Sisseton area. In March 1933, Mabel married Mike Van Heel in Britton, SD. They farmed in the Sisseton area until 1955 when they moved to Sisseton. Mabel then went to work at Melvins Cafe for 22 years. In 1977 she moved to Huron where she cared for elderly people and baby sat for her grandchildren and great grandchildren until 1985. She was a life time member of Lutheran Churches and was a member of Deborah Circle. She is survived by two daughters, Marlys Hofer of Fargo, ND and Violet Phillips of Huron; one son, Wayne Van Heel of Minnesota; 24 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha Johnson of Breckenridge, MN and Nora Jacobson of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Earl Warring and John Warring, one daughter, Muriel Ingle, one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Warring, two grandsons, Orville Elroy Chell in infancy and James Jim Chell in 1998, five brothers, Roy, Eugene, Norris, Stanley and Harold in infancy, and two sisters, Alice Hattle and Clara Engels.
