Lyle Nelson, age 85, of Huron, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Royal C. Johnson VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Arlington Cemetery at Arlington, SD, with Military Rites.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 27, from 5-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5-7 p.m.; or Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lyle David Nelson, son of Fred and Olive (Griffith) Nelson, was born on June 14, 1925, in Badger, SD. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1943.
On November 19, 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 18, 1946. After he returned from the military he began working for International Harvester in Huron.
On September 28, 1947, Lyle married Delphay Madsen in Badger, SD. They lived in Huron where Lyle spent his married life until the time of his death. Lyle started L&L Repair as a diesel mechanic which he owned until his retirement; then he was the coordinator for the Huron Area Senior Center Green Thumb office; member of the Board of Directors of the Huron Area Senior Center; and for many years was the manager of the shuttle buses at the South Dakota State Fair.
He was a member of American Lutheran Church; Beadle Bums Sams Camping Club; volunteer for Meals on Wheels; Huron Eye Opener Lions Club; VFW Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776; and American Legion William Reaves Post #7.
He enjoyed square dancing, fishing, hunting, and camping.
He is survived by 1 daughter, Sherry (Kevin) Kauth of Rapid City, SD; 1 son, Jeff (Sherry) Nelson of Crooks; SD; 4 grandchildren, Jason Nelson, Kaitlyn Nelson, Brandon Kauth, and Blake Kauth; 1 sister, Delwynne Rose of Susanville, CA; and 1 brother-in-law, Larry Madsen of Huron; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delphay on December 28, 2009; 2 infant daughters, Sharon and Susan; an infant brother, Darrell; and a brother-in-law, Harry Rose.
