Lyle Marshall, age 86, of 1050 Lawnridge Ave. SE, Huron, SD, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at his home.
His funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 1, at First Presbyterian Church in Huron with burial at Bonilla Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.; or Monday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lyle died Friday afternoon surrounded by his family at the home of his son, Jack, where he enjoyed living during his last years; at the age of 86 years, 3 months, 3 days.
Lyle Kenneth Marshall was born on February 26, 1923, to Herbert and Mary (Payne) Marshall at Hitchcock, SD. He grew up in Hitchcock and Bonilla areas and graduated from Bonilla High School in 1942.
On November 24, 1944, Lyle married Theone Tollefson in Huron, and lived and worked on a farm near Bonilla until moving into Huron in 1995.
Lyle was a rodeo clown as a young man and still enjoyed watching rodeos, especially those including his relatives and friends. He loved to dance, watch western movies, hunt, and guided many pheasant-hunters over the years.
He enjoyed helping others in many ways: he would hand them a little money or give them a job if needed; invited anyone, around a mealtime, into their home for food; gave them a place to stay; and was a mentor to young people in many areas, including driving vehicles, horseback riding, his infamous cattle drives, and many more.
He is survived by his children, Sandy (Roger) Kissner of Huron, SD, Larry (Cindy) Marshall of Rapid City, SD, Marlis (Bill) Costello of Alexandria, MN, and Jack (Midge) Marshall of Huron, SD; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Reva Maher of Pierre, SD, Marie Malone of Huron, SD, and Lenore Schamp of Sioux Falls, SD; 1 brother, Glen (Maxine) Marshall of Hitchcock, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Theone, on March 6, 2007; 1 son, Kenneth; 1 granddaughter, Sherrie; 4 sisters, Vera Woodard, Ellen Landeidel, Norma Maher, and Jessie Houck; and 5 brothers, Lawrence, Carl, Clyde, his twin Lester, and Keith.
