LuVerne H. Sheffield, age 77, of 734 Minnesota Ave SW, Huron, died Sunday, October 30, 2005, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 3, at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Brian Grover officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home. LuVerne H. Sheffield was born on April 28, 1928, to Walter and Marie (Dethlefs) Sheffield at Alpena, SD. He lived on the family farm at rural Wessington Springs and attended area schools. He left school in his junior year to help on the family farm, but completed his GED in 1985. On December 24, 1949, LuVerne married Arlene Kraft at Wessington Springs. They made their home on a farm at rural Wessington Springs where he was a dairy farmer. In 1968, they moved to a farm near Huron. He was employed at West Park and Kaspersons until his retirement when he moved to Huron where he has lived since that time. He was a longtime member of the Congregational United Church of Christ of Huron, and a 4-H leader. He enjoyed visiting with his friends, having coffee, and helping his neighbors at every opportunity until he was no longer physically able to do so. LuVerne is survived by his wife Arlene of Huron, 1 son, Daryl (Diana) Sheffield of Hilliard, OH; 3 daughters, Lynette Sheffield of Brooklyn, NY, Janice (Lee) Wiersma of Brookings and Carla (Bruce) Micheel of rural Cavour; 9 grandchildren, Jeri Morris, Brad Micheel, Matt Micheel, Tarasa Sheffield, Nicole Micheel, Jason Sheffield, Aaron Sheffield, Amber Sheffield and Tyler Micheel; 3 step grandchildren, Mark Wiersma, Chad Wiersma and Aaron Wiersma; 1 brother, Keith Sheffield of Mitchell; 3 sisters, Beverly Johnson of Baltic, Elaine (Willis) King of Belle Fourche and Linda Kowalski of Richland, WA; 1 sister-in-law, Barbara Sheffield of Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews. LuVerne was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Dean Sheffield, 1 sister, Lorraine Drake and 1 brother-in-law, Gerald Johnson.
