Obituary

Lulu E. Mencke, age 95, of Huron, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her Funeral service will be 1:30 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at American Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Virgil Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7pm on Wednesday, June 29th at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Lulu Elise Meyer, the daughter of Otto and Frieda (Schultz) Meyer, was born on December 7, 1920 on the family farm in Beadle County.  She was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Virgil where she was also a member for many years.  Lulu was a homemaker and cleaned houses for over 50 years. She also worked for Teno Perez making Teno's Taco's for many years.

Lulu married Eitel Mencke on March 4, 1939 in Dearborn Township in Beadle County.  They moved to Huron in 1948, living in the same place on Pennington Ave NW for 61 years.  She then moved to the Courtyard Apartments in 2009, and most recently to SunQuest Healthcare Center.

Lulu was a member of American Lutheran Church in Huron for many years. She enjoyed watching baseball, puzzles, and working around the farm. Lulu was an avid card player; she enjoyed playing Whist in Marathon and at the SunQuest Village.  Lulu also enjoyed having coffee with her friends at the Bales Café every Saturday morning.

Grateful for having shared in Lulu's life are her two sons: Jerry (Sandra) Mencke of Huron, SD, and Dan (Lue) Mencke of Spokane, WA; six grandchildren: Kim (Jeff) DeVries of Cavour, SD, Kurt (Karyl) Mencke of Richmond, VA, Kenneth Bushman of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kerri (Tim) McBride of Spokane, WA, Kammi (Brian) Smith, of Spokane, WA, and  Paul (Bernadette) Mencke of Cibolo, Texas; sixteen great-grandchildren: Paul, Jr., Carter, and Richmond Mencke, Lindsey, Tyler and Colton McBride, Ellie, Elise, Ethan, Emerson, Elaina, Elliot, Erianna DeVries, Keegan Mencke, and Bret and Cole Smith.

Lulu was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eitel in 2000; six brothers: Louie, Albert, Edwin, Teddy, Hubert, and Paul; and three sisters: Alta Gifford, Selma Roher, and Wilma King.
