Obituary

Lloyd V. Venables, age 85, of 826 Canary Lane, Huron, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Friday, November 12, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call this Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM this Thursday evening at the funeral home. Lloyd V. Venables was born on April 21, 1919, to John and Anna (Johnson) Venables, at Alpena, SD. He grew up and attended school at Alpena and graduated from Alpena High School in 1937. He moved to Huron and was employed at Fairmont Dairy. Lloyd enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 6, 1940, and served in the European Theater with the 873rd Bombardment Group. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany for 11 months during World War II, and received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on September 20, 1945. He returned to Huron and was employed at Costains Appliance Store. On November 26, 1947, Lloyd married Hazel Dubro at Sioux Falls. He was the owner of the Swap Shop Second Hand Store, and later the owner of Fair City Furniture for a number of years. In 1972, he opened The Carpet Center. He retired in 1981, and Lloyd and Hazel continued to live in Huron. His wife, Hazel, died on July 10, 1997. Beginning in 1998, he spent part of his winters in Arizona. He enjoyed traveling whenever time permitted. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, life-member of the Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, life-member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7, and past member of the Huron Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by 1 son, Gary (Dolly) Venables of Huron, 3 grandchildren, Cory Venables, Christopher Venables, and Chelsea Hunt; 1 brother, Larry (Cleo) Venables of Olympia, WA; 1 sister, Esther Hay of Worthington, MN; 1 sister-in-law, Donna (John) Bell of Huron; a special friend, Mary Brummet of Lexington, NE; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel; 2 brothers, John and Ernest; and 2 sisters, Margaret Jones, and Evelyn Arndt.
