Lester H. Bud Buckland age 86, of Huron, died Saturday May 29,2010 at his home in Huron, SD.
His Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the American Lutheran Church in Huron with Burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron, and Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be Monday, May 31, from 1-4 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home. A Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday night at the American Lutheran Church, with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Lester Bud Buckland the son of Charles and Mabel (Jefferson) Buckland was born on March 29, 1924 in Bryant, SD . Bud attended school in Bryant, SD. Bud served his country in the U.S.Navy during World War II as a Gunner Assistant on the U.S.S. Shamrock Bay. He served from 1943-1946 and was honorably discharged . Bud married Wilma Phillips on July 14, 1948 in Watertown, SD. To this union were born 6 children. Wilma died in 1993. Bud married Dee Hoffmann on June 21, 1997 in Huron, SD. Bud farmed in the Bryant area before moving to Huron. He also worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and Nash Finch Wholesale for many years before retiring in 1986. After his retirement, Bud worked part time for the Beadle County Highway Shop until 1995.
Bud was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776, the Watson Krauter American Legion Post #7, DAV, Huron R.S.V.P., and the Huron Rovers Campers Club. He enjoyed camping, playing cards, dancing, gardening, and the evening coffee group. He loved watching his kids and grandkids at their sports and school activities. Bud had a passion for reading and studying the Bible.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife Dee of Huron; 3 sons Roland (Kandi) Buckland of Colorado Springs, CO, Brad Buckland of Breckenridge, MN, and Dennis (Carol) Buckland of Mitchell, SD; 2 daughters, Lanette (Bill) Schmidt of Casper, WY, and Patricia (Tom) Shawd of Sioux Falls, SD; his stepson,John (Shelly) Hoffmann of Wessington, SD; 2 step-daughters, Barbara (Roger) Haberling of Miller, SD and Peggy (Dennis) Harkness of Huron, SD; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 7 step great-grandchildren; 9 sisters:, Evelyn (Earl)Kimpton, Portland, OR, Darlene Law, Elkhart, IN, Delores (Leo) Bill, Fullerton, CA, Betty (Larry) Brodahl, Cypress, CA, Marie (Verne) Larson, Rapid City, SD, Joan (Duane) Hoffman, Huron, SD, Virginia (Merle) Neu, De Smet, SD, Shirley Newstrom, Topeka, KS, and Tonnetta (Lyman) Lunde, Bryant, SD; sister-in-law, Dorothy Buckland; and many nieces and nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Wilma in 1993; infant son Charles; brother Floyd Buckland; 3 sisters, Lillian Hansen, Violet Stearns, and Hazel Blachford.
