LeRoy E. Jager, age 79, of Alpena, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at his residence. His funeral service will be 2pm on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the United Parish of Alpena with burial following at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Monday, June 11th followed by a prayer service and time of sharing at 7 pm at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or visitation one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday at the church.
Leroy was born on July 6th, 1938 near Alpena, SD to Edward and Minnie Jager. He attended school in rural Alpena through 8th grade and then started farming with his dad. He married Diane Parkhurst on August 12th, 1967 in DeSmet, SD. They lived in the DeSmet area for a few years where he worked as a farmhand. In 1971, they returned to the Alpena area, where he worked for various farmers and on his own 160-acre hobby farm. He enjoyed buying, fixing, and selling classic tractors, as well as helping those who rented his pasture with their cattle. Leroy also was a talented musician. He enjoyed playing the guitar, accordion, and piano. In addition to being a caring husband, Leroy was a fun-loving dad and grandpa. On Sunday afternoons, he could often be found either in a card game or a ball game with his grandchildren.
Thankful to have shared his life is his wife of 50 years, Diane. He is also survived by 3 children, Valerie Hoffman of Martinsburg WV, Vince Jager and Lori Keleher both of Huron; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister & brother-in-law, Betty and Ordell Kopfmann.
