LeRoy D. Hansen, age 86, of Huron, SD, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at the Huron Regional Center in Huron, SD.
His Funeral service will be 3:30 PM Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. Burial will be at 2:30 PM on Saturday at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation, with the family present, will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, August 25, at the Welter Funeral Home, with a prayer service to begin at 6:00 p.m.; or visitation one half hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Visit

LeRoy D. Hansen, the son of William Sr. and Maggie (Kludt) Hansen, was born on March 24, 1931 on the family farm near Woonsocket, SD. LeRoy lived on the family farm and attended the country school in Sanborn County. LeRoy also served his country in the 724th Transportation Battalion during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. LeRoy worked for the Bales Cattle Company and was a lifelong farmer.
LeRoy married Sharron VanDerAarde on June 30, 1957 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sanborn County. The couple made their home on the family farm near Alpena and Woonsocket.
LeRoy was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron where he served as an elder for many years. He was baptized on May 17, 1951 and confirmed on September 3, 1944. LeRoy loved to play pool and cards. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Grateful for having shared in LeRoy's life are his daughter, Penny (Chuck) Lentz of Huron, SD; son, Curt Hansen of Pipestone, MN; seven grandchildren: Jason (Tyra) Lentz of Chester, SD and their children, Blaine, Chase, Fuschia, and Wyatt; Lisa (Brad) Hepper of Huron, SD and their children, Josalyn and Alex; Amanda Lentz of Alexandria, VA; Dillon Lentz of Iroquois, SD, Heather (Trevor) Bunde of Crooks, SD and their children, Sutton, Kobe, and Quinn, Heidi (Travis) Ellison of Crooks, SD and their children, Logan, Brooks, and Lincoln; and Cole Hansen of Hartford, SD and his daughter, Peyton;
brothers, Bill Hansen of Huron, SD and Duane (MaryAnn) Hansen of Mitchell, SD; two sisters: Shirley Knutson of Huron, SD, and Jan (Ken) Huber of Texas; sister-in-law, Darleen Hansen of Huron, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Sharron in 2015; brother, Johnny Hansen; and sisters, Norma Spellbring and Deloris Moilan; brothers-in-law, Jack Steffenson, Jerry VanDerAarde, and Marvin Knutson; and sisters-in-law, Mitchiko VanDerAarde, Beverly Hansen, and Linda Steffenson.
