Obituary

LeRoy L. Gamber, age 83 of Huron, SD, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016 at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron, SD.

His memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at the Huron Christian Church, with burial at the Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock, SD, and military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.

Visitation, with the family present, will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, April 4, with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.


LeRoy Lee Gamber, the son of Lauren N. and Myrtle M. (Phillips) Gamber, was born on September 10, 1932 in Pipestone, MN.  He attended country school in the Willow Lake Area.  LeRoy served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on September 10, 1954.  He also lived in Hitchcock, and Willow Lake before moving to Huron in 1954.
LeRoy married Valoris Sorenson on March 25, 1956 in Pipestone, MN. He worked as a mechanic for Osman Motors for 19 years, Jones Company for 10 years, and James River Equipment for 9 years before retiring in 2000 to take care his wife Valoris.  LeRoy also bartended for over 40 years in places like the Elks Club, The Plains, The VFW, Club Lido, Bar 77, and the Gaslight.
LeRoy lived at the Campus Apartments for the past 10 years.  During those ten years LeRoy would volunteer for the Senior Center, sitting at the front desk, helping in the kitchen and doing any odd jobs that needed to be done around the Senior Center whenever asked.  LeRoy also volunteered by helping with parade routes, taking tickets at the arena, and assisting people to their doctor appointments.
LeRoy was a member of the Huron Christian Church.  He was also a lifetime member of the VFW Forrest McMullen Post # 1776.  LeRoy loved spending time with his family and watching his children and grandchildren play in many baseball, basketball, soccer, and football games.
Grateful for having shared in LeRoy's life are his children: Lorrie (Brian) Weyh of Clark, SD, Bryan (Susie) Gamber of Huron, SD, Brenda (Leland) Dean of Huron, SD, Lauren (Chalyce) Gamber of Sioux Falls, SD, Becky (Mark) Knight of Huron, SD, and stepson, Craig (Denise) Larsen of Jacksonville, North Carolina; 13 grandchildren: Mikki (Ryan Riley) Muilenburg of Mitchell, SD, Jeremy Muilenburg of Clark, SD, Brady (Kasey) Muilenburg of Watertown, SD, Brandie Murphree of Brookings, SD, Chris Murphree of Huron, SD, Elizabeth Murphree of Aberdeen, SD, Marsha (Bob) Thomas,  of Huron, SD, Amy (Shad) Gamber of Huron, SD, Nick and Brandon Gamber of Sioux Falls, SD, Tara (Daniel) Knight of Spring, TX, Samuel Knight of Huron, SD, Seth (Lexi) Knight of Huron, SD; step-grandchildren: Joshua Larsen, North Carolina, Tammy Larsen, Japan, Jason Larsen of Faulkton, SD, and Kristin (Michael) Mark of Fayetteville, NC;  21 great-grandchildren; 5 step great-grandchildren;  two brothers: Virgil (Sharon) Gamber of Rapid City, SD, and Gene (Jen) Gamber of Storm Lake, IA; sisters-in-law Monica Gamber and Marlene Gamber,  both of Huron, SD, Betty Gamber of Alabama, and Bonnie Gamber of Kansas; Brother- in-law, Oliver Tollefson; and several nieces and nephews.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Valoris; Son Wayne, Step-son, Mike Larsen; brothers: Willis, Rodger, Charles, Lavern, Stan, and Leslie; sisters: Ardith Gamber, Phyllis Tollefson, and LaVon Gully; and step-father, Henry Arends.
