Leonard Lorenz, age 83, of rural Iroquois, SD, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 27, at the United Methodist Church of Esmond, SD, with burial in Esmond Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials can be sent to the Esmond United Methodist Church Building Fund. The church is included in the National Historic Registry. Leonard Dene Lorenz, son of Hans and Leona (Ulin) Lorenz, was born on May 10, 1928, in Esmond, SD. He attended Esmond Elementary School grades 1-9, and Carthage High School 10-12, graduating in 1946. On February 11, 1951, Leonard married Shirley Currier at Bancroft, SD. They lived at Esmond, SD (rural Iroquois, SD). He was self employed in farming and raising livestock at rural Esmond and worked with his father and brothers until his retirement in 1989. On June 2, 1990, Leonard married Donna McDaniel in Broadland, SD. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Esmond; Fun-Steppers Dance Club in Huron; Tree Farm USA; and Christian Home Builders. His many interests included "dancing-dancing-dancing", family activities, hunting, water skiing, boating, and talking farming. He attended all of his children's events in high school, except one time when the weather prevented him from attending, plus he traveled to all three of his grandchildren's confirmations, played the accordion, taught dance along with Shirley, built much of his home himself, and enjoyed his cars. Leonard is survived by his 2 sons, Alan (Nancy) Lorenz of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Gary (Martha) Lorenz of Columbia, IL; his daughter, Pat (Norm Kohn) Lorenz of North Las Vegas, NV; 3 grandchildren, Laura Lorenz of Phoenix, AZ, Adam Lorenz of Scottsdale, AZ, and Brian Lorenz of Fountain Hills, AZ; step-daughter, Bobbie (Allen) Gatzke of Hitchcock, SD; 9 step-grandchildren, Debbie (Greg) Binger, Paula (Jeff) Tollefson, Jeffery (Sheila) Gatzke, Teresa (Cory) Mallon, Daniel (Robin) Gatzke, David (Jessica) Gatzke, Rebekah (Donald) Wolkenhaurer, Sarah (Chad) Kirby, and Amanda (Tyler) Hopson; 28 step-great grandchildren; 1 brother, Lyle (Vi) Lorenz of rural Iroquois; 1 sister, Delores (Florian Roeder) Rowan of Mt. Vernon, SD; and special friend, Beverly Morris of Artesian, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents; both of his wives, Shirley (Currier) Lorenz and Donna (McDaniel) Lorenz; 1 brother, Larry Lorenz; 1 step son and spouse, Kerry (Joan) McDaniel.
