Obituary

Leonard Fischer, age 82, of 1400 21st St. SW, Huron, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, March 25, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Christopher Ascher and Rev. Dale Sattgast officiating, and Honor Guard by the Huron Veterans Council. Burial will be at 1:00 PM Mountain Standard Time, on Friday, March 26, at Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis with Full Military Honors. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00-8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Leonard Chris Fischer was born on December 19, 1921, to Christian and Mary (Freese) Fischer at Wessington Springs, SD. He grew up and attended school in Wessington Springs. On February 17, 1943, Leonard entered the U.S. Army during World War II, and served on the Philippine Islands and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged on February 4, 1946. On October 14, 1946, Leonard married Velma Quiram. To this union, three children were born, Roger Dean, Leonard Lee, and Stanley Jay. He was recalled to active military duty on October 19, 1950, during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart in March of 1951, and of other various decorations and medals that he received, he was the proudest of the Presidential Unit Citation which was given for action near Kapyong, Korea, on April 24/25, 1951. He was honorably discharged on September 1, 1951. After his military service Leonard was a farmer and custom combiner. His wife, Velma died on January 18, 1960. On January 27, 1968, Leonard married Geneva Quiram at Tacoma, WA. The couple moved to Tacoma where Leonard was employed by Boeing Aircraft Company. In 1977, they returned to Huron where he worked for Telelet, Inc., from which he retired in 1984 due to ill health. In 1988, he returned to work part time for Huron Public Schools. In 1996, he assumed the management position of Prairie Villa Mobile Home Park, a position from which he gained tremendous satisfaction. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, and the Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776 of Huron. He is survived by his wife, Geneva of Huron; 3 sons, Roger (Sally) Fischer of Ft. Worth, TX, Leonard Lee (Sandee) Fischer of Pasco, WA, and Stanley Fischer of Huron; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 1 daughter-in-law, Teresa Fischer of Frederick, OK; 1 sister-in-law, Georgia Georman of Flint, MI; special friends, Carolyn and Loren McMasters of Volga, SD, and Tracy Herren of Huron; several nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Velma on January 18, 1960; 3 sisters, Alma Fischer, Faye Haines, and Lillian Pederson; 2 brothers, Dean, and Harold; 3 brothers-in-law, Carroll Haines, Orlo Bud Pederson, and Ray Whitlock.
