Leon D. Schroeder, age 69, of Huron, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017 at his residence after a short battle with cancer.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at American Lutheran Church in Huron. Interment with military honors by the Huron Veteran Council will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, February 22nd at Welter Funeral Home; or visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Leon was born on September 18, 1947 in Wessington Springs, SD to Clarence and Katherine (Holtz) Schroeder. The family lived on a farm near Woonsocket until they moved to Wessington Springs in 1950. In 1952, they moved to Huron where Leon made his home until his passing. He attended school in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1965. Leon worked part time for Edwards Floor Covering in 1964 and then worked full time after his high school graduation.
Leon enlisted in the SD Army National Guard in 1966 and served part time until he transitioned to full time status in 1985 and served until his retirement in 1999 after 33 years of honorable service.
Leon was united in marriage to Rosanne Rasmussen on September 16, 1967 at American Lutheran Church in Huron. In 1970, Leon and his brother Allen bought Edward's Floor Covering and built a new store on 21st Street in 1972; they sold the business and store in 1976 when Leon went into the construction trade and worked on his own for many years. He also worked with Wayne Poe Construction, Groves Construction, and Paul Benker. In his retirement years, Leon worked in maintenance for Our Home, Inc. until he permanently retired in 2014.
Leon enjoyed woodworking, restoring old cars, flowers and landscaping, and fishing and hunting in his younger years. He was a member of the Huron Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years and Huron Ambulance for many years. He also was a member of American Lutheran Church, American Legion, and founding member of Huron Backstreet Cruisers Car Club.
He is survived by his son, Scott (Kelly Haines) Schroeder of Huron and Kelly's daughters, Katie and Shaylee; one daughter, Angie (Mike Tisland) Schroeder of Huron; one granddaughter, Alyssa Rosanne Schroeder; one sister-in-law, Rose Marie Schroeder of Huron; one brother-in-law, Larry Rasmussen of Huron; nieces and nephews; and his faithful canine companion, Abel.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosanne on November 22, 2013; his brother, Allen on January 22, 2013; and his sister-in-law, Alice Rasmussen.
