Leo Pete Petersen, age 88, of 1369 Kansas Ave. NE, in Huron, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at his home. His funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 25, at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Senner officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call this Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday morning until time of service at the funeral home. The family will be present Wednesday morning at the funeral home from 9:00 AM until time of service. Leo George Petersen was born on May 29, 1919, to Simon and Larsine (Nielsen) Petersen in Tracy, MN. He grew up in Tracy and graduated from Tracy High School in 1938. He then worked for the Tracy Ice & Transportation Company and the Tracy Bottling Company. In January 1943, Leo entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater and in the Philippine Islands during World War II. He was honorably discharged on March 8, 1946. Following his discharge he was employed by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad as a locomotive fireman in Huron. On October 17, 1950, Leo married Doris Jones in Mankato, MN. After a 36 year career with the railroad, Leo retired in 1982 as a locomotive engineer. He was a member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7, lifetime member of the Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776, and a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris on December 14, 1999; 4 sisters, Hilda Neuman, Val Berven, Erna Patzer, and Mary DeVetter; 1 brother, Karl Petersen; 4 brothers-in-law, Walter Patzer, Gerald DeVetter, John Neumann, and Tim Berven; and 1 sister-in-law, Nellie Petersen.
