Leo Koerner, age 91, of Huron, SD, died Monday morning, December 7, 2015, at the Hospice Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, SD.

His funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 11, 2015, at United Parish of Alpena Church with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery, Alpena.

Visitation with family present will be Thursday, December 10th, from 5-7 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home, with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Leo Koerner, the son of Fred J. and Katherina (Kammer) Koerner, was born on February 20, 1924, on the family farm in Alpena, SD. He attended country school until the eighth grade when he was needed to help work the farm. On December 3, 1949, Leo married Verna Teveldal in Huron, SD. The couple made their home on the family farm for many years near Alpena until moving to Huron in 2001.

Leo was a member of the United Parish of Alpena Church. Farming and raising livestock was Leo's life, until his retirement in 2001. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching boxing. Leo and Verna enjoyed traveling and camping with their motorhome or fifth wheel camper over the years. They also spent several winters in Donna, TX. Leo enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared in Leo's life are his three children, Tonya (Brian) Whitmore of Huron, Terry Koerner of Alpena, and Todd Koerner of Alpena; five grandchildren, Tasha (Rob) Stahl, Matt (Heather) Whitmore, Felishia Koerner, Michelle Whitmore, and Jennifer Koerner; step-grandson, Drew Weber; eight great grandchildren, Jaylin Koerner, Summer, Autumn and, Reese Stahl, Allie and Natalie Whitmore, and Adalynne and ElliAnah Trebelcock; and many nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verna; son, Tim Koerner; and many other family members.
