Lawrence Mastel, age 83, of Huron died Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 24, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, October 23, at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to service at the church. Lawrence N. Mastel was born October 6, 1928, near Ipswich, South Dakota, to William and Kathryn (Wentz) Mastel. He graduated from Ipswich Holy Cross High School in 1947. After graduation, Lawrence worked for the railroad for a short time before joining the U. S. Army. While in the Army, he served with an Armored Tank Division in Germany during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged, Lawrence returned to Huron and worked for Armour& Co. for over 33 years. After retiring from Armour's, he worked for the City of Huron with the Parks Dept. Lawrence enjoyed fishing, gardening, and playing solitaire. He loved to spend time with his family, especially spoiling his grandchildren. Lawrence will be remembered for his great sense of humor. Lawrence was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Forrest McMullen VFW Post # 1776, and William Reaves American Legion Post #7. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Ethel of Huron; five children, Linda (Ron) Babb of Eagle River, AK, Arland (Karen) Mastel of Wallace, SD, Steven Mastel of Huron, Lois (Jim) Dorris of Huron, David (Sue) Mastel of Huron; daughter-in-law, Christie Mastel of Ft. Yukon, AK; 17 grandchildren, Lucy Rose, Cristina, Michael Jr., Julie, Chris, Ronnie, Ray, Neal, Michelle, Katie, Steven Jr., Jason, Stephanie, Kristie, Daniel, Tara, Amber; 17 great grandchildren; 5 sisters, Rose Jasper, Frances Geier, Florence Dodd, Amy Sporer, Dorothy Ports; and many nieces and nephews. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael in 2010; four brothers, and one sister.
