Obituary

Lawrence J. Bud Larsen, age 96, of Wolsey, died Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 24, at the First Presbyterian Church at Wolsey with Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell and Rev. Dr. William Pfautz officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday morning. The family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Lawrence Larsen was born on July 25, 1909, the oldest of 5 children to Lawrence and Jessie (Johnson) Larsen at Wolsey, SD. He attended Wolsey schools and then started farming in the Wolsey area. On August 18, 1933, Bud married C. Azile Darling at Lemmon, SD. Bud farmed until 1940, at which time he moved to Inglewood, CA, where he worked as a welder in the Navy shipyards during World War II, returning to Wolsey in 1945. He resumed farming until 1964 when he started Larsen Manufacturing Company, manufacturing tractor and combine cabs. He retired in 1980 and continued to live in Wolsey and spent many summers at Pickerel Lake. In 2004, Bud moved to StoneyBrook suites in Huron and in the spring of 2005 he became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home. Bud had an inquisitive mind, and entrepreneurial spirit, a stoic nature, and a wonderfully engaging personality. His quick wit and sense of humor brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. He never knew a stranger. Bud will always be remembered by his family as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and by everyone as a wonderful human being. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Wolsey for many years. He is survived by 1 son, Dennis (Mary) Larsen of Wolsey; 1 daughter, Jan (Blayne) Thomas of Clovis, CA; 5 grandchildren, Melinda Rumpza of Greenville, SD, Bret Larsen of La Quinta, CA, Brad Thomas of Benicia, CA, Brian Thomas of Draper UT, and Becky Thomas of Draper, UT; 9 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Harlow (June) Larsen of Huron; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Azile of 65 years, who died on December 20, 1998; and 3 sisters, Enid Wood, Ila Greenfield, and Jean Simms.
