Larry R. Husted, age 76, of Huron, died Monday, November 2, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Lake Norden, SD. His funeral service will be 2:00 pm on Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at Riverside Cemetery. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Huron Veteran's Council and the Ellsworth AFB 28th Bomb Wing Honor Guard. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Friday at First United Methodist Church; or one hour prior to the funeral service. Larry was born on July 22, 1939 in Huron to Earl and Ilo (Coral) Husted. He attended grade school in rural Beadle County and graduated from Huron High School in 1958. After graduation, he worked as a hired man in the Gregory, SD area and later in the Pierre area for several jobs, including the Oahe Dam. He was united in marriage to Rosanell (Rose) Stavely on March 11, 1963 in Golden, CO. In September 1961, Larry entered the US Air Force and completed basic military training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He was stationed at Bunker Hill AFB, Indiana from 1963-1967, McCord AFB, Washington from 1967-1971, and returned to Bunker Hill AFB in 1971 (which was later renamed Grissom AFB) where he served until his retirement as a SMSgt in 1982 after 21 years of active duty service. During his years in the Air Force, Larry served in the Field Maintenance career field and spent the majority of his time as a crew chief on the B-58 Convair Bomber, C-141 Starlifter Cargo Transport, and KC-135 Stratotanker Refueler. He flew many missions around the world and served a one year tour in Vietnam. His decorations and medals earned during his 21 year Air Force career included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, USAF NCO Professional Military Education Graduate, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Award & Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After his retirement from active military service, Larry returned to Huron and worked for Olsen Implement from 1983-2010. His hobbies included riding his motorcycle and attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, attending all types of racing, and watching NASCAR on TV. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Rose Husted of Huron; 1 daughter, Brenda Powers of Middlebury, Indiana; 1 son, Tony (Vanessa) Husted of Seattle, WA; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grand-daughter; 1 son-in-law, David Maxwell of Peru, Indiana; 2 sisters, Laura Smidt and Earldene Greenfield, both of Huron, and Linda Schamp of Aurora, SD. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter, Cindy Maxwell; and brothers-in-law James Greenfield and Ronnie Smidt.
