Obituary

Larry DeJean, age 76, of Huron, SD, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at his home. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Sunday, December 8, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Lawrence Lee DeJean, son of Raymond and Adeline (Okken) DeJean, was born on April 21, 1937, in Plankinton, SD. He attended country school near Alpena and high school in Cavour. His father died when he was 16 and he had to go to work to help out the family. He worked for a period of time as a farmhand in Minnesota. Larry also worked part time at Armour & Company until he was 18 years old, after which he worked full time. On January 14, 1967, Larry married Julie McQuirk in Huron. In 1984, as Armour was closing, Larry moved to Fr. Madison, IA, where he worked for 6 months at Armour's. In 1985, Larry returned to Huron and worked various jobs including Dakota Pork until his retirement in 1996. He was past member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cavour, and presently a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. His many interests included gardening, yard work, babysitting for his grandchildren, camping, watching sports and following the sports activities of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Julie of Huron; 3 children, LeeAnn (David) Verhoek of Estelline, SD, Jason (Katie) De Jean of Odebolt, IA, and Tracy (Doug Hooth) DeJean of Huron; 9 grandchildren, Kyle Verhoek, Samantha Verhoek, Cooper DeJean, Beckett De Jean, Jaxx DeJean, Beau DeJean, Zach DeJean, Kayla Hooth, and Cody Hooth; 2 great grandchildren, Autumn Verhoek and Liam Litwiller; 6 brothers, Don (Donna) DeJean of Yankton, David (Penny) DeJean of Huron, Ralph (Connie) DeJean of Huron, Roger (Judy) DeJean of Huron, Evan DeJean of Rockford, IL, and Gary (Shelly) DeJean of Ten Step, MN; 2 sisters, Connie (Daryl) Waldner of Huron, and Mary (Don) O'Connor of Ft. Pierre; sister-in-law, Arlene DeJean of Huron; Julie's 6 siblings, Eva Schlenker of Watertown, Colleen (Wayne) Hemstreet of Ocheyedan, IA, Virginia Gilbert of Watertown, Ralph (Syble) McQuirk of Oregon, Edward (Jayne) McQuirk of Utah, and Ruth (Gayle) Hauser of Mesquite, NV; many nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenny DeJean; niece, Kathy DeJean; nephew, Brian Waldner; 3 brothers-in-law, Frank Schlenker, Bob Gilbert, and Gerald McQuirk.
