Lawrence (Larry) R. Ames, age 69, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at his home after a two-year long battle with cancer. His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with burial at St. Martin's Cemetery in Huron. Military Honors will be provided by Huron Veteran's Council. The funeral mass will be live-streamed on Welter Funeral Home Facebook Page. Visitation, with his family present, will be from 4-6 PM on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. A Rosary service will begin at 6 PM led by the Knights of Columbus.
Lawrence Robert Ames was born on October 29, 1951 in Huron, SD to parents Earl and Agnes (O'Connor) Ames. He attended St. Teresa's Catholic School and Huron High School, graduating in 1969. Larry enlisted in the United States Army in November of 1969 and was honorably discharged in July of 1972.
Larry married Carolyn Kerr in Huron on September 28, 1985.
Larry was employed at many places in Huron including Buhl's Laundry, HRMC, Violet Tschetter Nursing Home, Huron Nursing Home, Under the Sun Rental, Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, and Office Peeps. He was also a fixture at the State Fair as a gate attendant and hamburger master during the races at the Dakota Statefair Speedway.
In his spare time, Larry enjoyed bowling, playing cards, attending races, and spending time with family. He was also an excellent griller. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, JC's, American Legion, and Huron Area Community Theater. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish where he was involved in various councils.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Huron; children, Robert (Tina) Ames of Wadena, MN, Barb Ames (Frederick Ray, Jr.) of Huron, Rachel Ames of Watertown, and Dale (Rachel Marshall) Ames of Huron; 12 grandchildren; and sister Mary Deuchar of Aberdeen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Joe Ames and Marlene (Wayne) Waldron.
