Kenneth L. Witte, age 84, of Huron, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Avantara in Huron. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with burial to follow at St. Martin Cemetery in Huron with military honors. Visitation, with his family present, will be from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service on Thursday morning. A Scripture Service will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Kenneth Leo Witte was born on July 14, 1939 in Orient, South Dakota to parents Harold H. and Alfreda (Bode) Witte. He lived on the family farm with his seven brothers and sister, attending country school and graduating from Orient High School. Ken joined the United States Army on October 31, 1957.
On June 11, 1958, Ken married Hazel Marker in Aberdeen, Maryland where he was stationed. Shortly after their wedding, Ken was sent to Korea. After his return, Ken and Hazel started their family and lived in Junction City, Kansas and Sparta, Wisconsin before he was honorably discharged. The growing family moved to Miller, SD and Vivian, SD where Ken was a route driver for Old Home Bread. He then took the manager position of Old Home in Huron. He retired in 2002. After retirement, Ken drove school bus for 8 years for the Huron School District. Ken believed in volunteering and helping others in the community. He drove the van for the VA, delivered meals on wheels and gave golf cart rides during the State Fair.
In his free time, Ken enjoyed fishing, camping, wood working, and puzzles. He always loved having a dog by his side. Ken was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Huron Senior Center and the Rover Camping Club.
Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife of 65+ years, Hazel, of Huron; his children, Leonard (Kathy) of Brookings, Rodney (Hally) of Huron, Tamara (Timothy) Jackson of Humboldt, Carla Picek of Huron, Brad (Robyn) of Des Moines, IA; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and #18 arriving in August; his siblings, Ray of Watertown, Bill (Sherry) of Gettysburg, Don (Judy) of Sioux Falls, Darlene Van Well of Sioux Falls, Terry (Carol) of Sioux Falls; sisters-in-law, Beth Witte of Seneca, and Phyllis Smith of Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold (MaryAnn) and Robert; sister-in-law Barb Witte and brothers-in-law Kenny VanWell and Lloyd Smith.
