Katherine Hoffman, age 91, of 50 7th St. SE, Huron, SD, died Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.

Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, at Welter Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with the family present and a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m.; or Tuesday afternoon one hour prior to the service.

Katherine Hoffman was born Katherine Frances Torgrud, daughter of Edward and Selma (Domagala) Torgrud, on June 1, 1918, in Huron, SD. She received her education here and graduated from Huron High School in 1936.

Katherine married Ralph Schamp and they moved to Detroit, MI, where Katherine was a homemaker and their children were born. They moved back to Huron in 1949.

After returning to Huron, Katherine worked at the popcorn/caramel stand in the downtown area, and also in the kitchen at St. Johns Hospital. Her husband, Ralph, died on September 18, 1951.

She moved to Morrison, IL, where she met and later married George Hoffman in 1970. She worked as a line worker for General Electric for 15 years until her retirement. Her husband, George, died in the mid 1970s.

Katherine then lived in various areas, including Colorado, Idaho, Montana, back to Huron for several years, back to Idaho, and returned to South Dakota (Aberdeen) in 2007, and to Huron in September of 2008.

Her many interests included crocheting, making afghans, many kinds of craft work, bowling, fishing, and volunteer work at the Senior Center and the hospital.

She is survived by 1 son, Ralph (Leona) Schamp of Katy, TX; 1 daughter, Jan (Bob) Delahay of Gunnison, CO; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Ralph Schamp and George Hoffman; 1 sister, Marjorie Hart; and 1 brother-in-law, Virgil Hart.
