Karen attended a one room schoolhouse from grades one through seven and was homeschooled in the eighth grade. For her high school years, she attended Miller High School and during those years she lived with her Uncle Mike Sisk and Aunt Jean and their three children: Michael, Craig and Betty Jo. Karen married Terry Brugman in September 1960 and from that union two children were born, a son Kyle Ray and a daughter Shelly Jean. Karen loved spending time with her three grandchildren; Katie, Amanda and Evan and spent many holidays with them while also attending as many of their special events as she was able.
While raising her family and working full-time, she thoroughly enjoyed her friends and her weekly bowling league while also participating in several National bowling tournaments. Karen was an avid sports fan and loved watching "her" Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas University Jayhawks.
