Julian Elmer Peterson, son of Jens and Anna (Bergeleen) Peterson, was born on September 7, 1922, in rural Alpena, SD. He graduated from Alpena High School in 1941. Julian enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 2, 1941, and served aboard ships as a radioman in the African-European Theater and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged on July 1, 1947. He returned home and on November 6, 1946, Julian married Joan Meyer in Huron. He worked for a period of time for Alpena Creamery and Bell Bakery, and then worked many years for Metz Bakery as a delivery route salesman. Following his retirement in 1984 he continued to work as a substitute at Metz Bakery for several years filling in for those on vacation. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Huron; and American Legion William Reaves Post #7. His many interests included fishing, dancing, listening to music, playing cards, and following the Minnesota Twins. Julian was a kind and generous man. He never had a harsh word to say about anyone and he always looked for the positive in them. Once you met Julian you immediately had a friend for life. Other people always came first in Julian's life and he was willing to help anyone at anytime. He was very proud of his family and took every opportunity to "brag" about them, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by 2 sons, Jeffery Peterson of Stillwater, MN, and Jerry Peterson of Tea, SD; 2 daughters, Julie Struss of Sioux Falls, and Jayne (Brad) Carlson of Tea, SD; 6 grandchildren, Angela Johnson, Chad Struss, Sarah Peterson, Joe Peterson, Amy Carlson, and Amanda Carlson; 9 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Golda Tebay of Alpena, and Doris Huether of Chamberlain; and several nieces and nephews.
