Joyce A. Nelson-Walker, age 87, of Wessington Springs, died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center in Wessington Springs.
Her memorial service will be 11:00 am Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs with a burial later in the spring in Earlville Lutheran Cemetery.
There will be no memorial visitation.
Joyce Adeline Walker was born April 28, 1923 on a farm near Virgil, SD, to Peter and Rena (Nesson) Evensen. She attended Burr Oak Township grade school, Alpena High School, and Huron College of Commerce. After graduation, she was employed by Armour & Co. in Huron.
On July 6, 1947, Joyce married Selmer R. Nelson in Van Nuys, CA. They lived in Englewood and Woodland Hills CA. While in California, she attended night classes at Pierce College in Woodland Hills. Joyce worked for Sears Auditing dept. in Englewood, Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo, and retired in 1979, from Northrop Corp., Ventura Division in Moorpark, CA. Joyce and Selmer moved to Alpena in 1982, spending their winters in California and Arizona. After 44 years of marriage, Selmer died in July, 1991.
On August 29, 1992, Joyce married Donald Walker at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs. They lived in Alpena for a time and then moved to Wessington Springs in June of 1993. Don died in March of 2001.
Joyce was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Owens-Kunze American Legion Post #116 Auxiliary of Alpena, Wessington Springs Senior Center, and a bridge group. She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and counted cross stitch.
Joyce is survived by her daughter, Peggie (Richard) White of New Hope, MN; two step-daughters, Jeanrae (Donald) Hatton of Rio Rico, AZ, Pamela (Greg) Heck of Phoenix, AZ; 7 grandchildren, Kimberlie LaBerge, Donald Slayton, Timothy White, Dr. Andrew White, Kristen Ruiz, Scott Hatton, Debora Figard; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Gene Evensen of Wessington Springs; and nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Selmer; second husband, Donald; and one brother, Vern.
