Joyce Roy, age 95, of Huron, SD, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Her body has been cremated and her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 14, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Burial of her cremated remains will be held at St. Martin Cemetery at a later date. Memorial visitation with family present will be Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Joyce Roy was born Joyce Carol Henderson, daughter of Raymond and Winfred (Fitch) Henderson, on March 23, 1919, in Sherwood, ND. She attended and graduated from Sherwood High School in Sherwood, ND, in 1936. She then attended and graduated as a registered nurse from St. Andrews Nursing School in Bottineau, ND. On September 15, 1940, Joyce married Alexander Roy in Belcourt, ND. She worked as a surgical nurse for 2 years at St. Ann's Hospital in Belcourt, ND. She then went into private nursing over the next several years in various cities. In 1962, she became the 2nd-floor charge nurse at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron, retiring after 25 years of service. Following her retirement she spent many years as a volunteer at the St. Francis Shop, kindergarten volunteer at Holy Trinity Catholic School, and a hospice volunteer in which she was selected as the Hospice Volunteer of the Year for 1990. Joyce was also an avid gardener. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She is survived by 9 children, Richard Roy of Cavour, Ronald (Laurie) Roy of Huron, Dennis (Jodi) Roy of Pierre, Cheryl Wheeler of Sioux Falls, Kathy Watson of Bismarck, ND, Alexis (John) McEnelly of Huron, Duane (LeAnne) Roy of Huron, Beth (Greg) Wilcox of Sioux Falls, and Carol (Tom) Gietzen of Huron; 21 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sister, Janice Schepp of Bottineau, ND; brother-in-law, Joe Roy of Oregon; sister-in-law, Dolly (Bruce) Brown of Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alexander on March 30, 1970; infant daughter, Rita Ann Roy; 2 sons-in-law, Dennis Watson, and Ray Wheeler; father-and-mother-in-law, Edward and Virginia Roy; 3 brothers, Wayne Henderson, Keith Henderson, and Bryce Henderson; 3 sisters-in-law, Margaret Henderson, Shirley Henderson, and Ruth Henderson.
