Joy Charlotte (Moller) Shoemaker was born on March 20, 1929 to Rudolph and Fern (Pierce) Moller on a farm near Wessington, SD. She graduated from Wessington High School and Northern Normal Teacher's College. She taught in a country school for one year before she married Duane Shoemaker (whom she had met as a child) on May 27, 1948. They farmed near Wolsey. She was a devoted wife and mother.

Joy was an avid gardener; she loved flowers of all kinds, especially those she grew herself. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds in her yard. She was a wonderful seamstress who made clothes for her family. She was a self-taught artist who enjoyed painting and doing crafts with the kids. She also spent time reading mysteries and doing the daily crossword in the newspaper. Joy obsessed over watching and predicting the weather. She was a gracious hostess and always had something to eat if you stopped by. Her deepest love besides Duane were her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wolsey and a member of the Presbyterian Women. She taught Sunday School for several years.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her husband Duane, her children; Linda and Jim Cameron, Huron; Lee and Truman Henry, Aberdeen; Dale and Pat Shoemaker, Wolsey; Dalaine and Gahlan Pleinis, Eden, SD; Jim and Amy Shoemaker, Yankton. 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and her sister Ruth Anne Moller of Rapid City.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her step-mother Anna Barrows Moller, and three of her sisters; Freda Quiram, Doris Gogolin and Fern Elizabeth Brunick.
