Josephine "Josie" Elizabeth Soderberg, age 100, of Brookings, SD and formerly of Huron, died Thursday, January 21, 2016 at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with burial in St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Monday, January 25, 2016 at the Welter Funeral Home with a Scripture Wake Service and Catholic Daughters Rosary beginning at 6:30 pm; or one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church.
Josie was born on June 10, 1915 in Ramona, SD to James and Josephine (Burkler) Carmody.
Josie graduated from Winfred High School and attended General Beadle ( now Dakota State University) for one year obtaining a teacher's certificate. Josie taught at a county school for several years.
On December 18, 1943, Josie was united in marriage to Palmer Soderberg in San Luis Obispo, CA where Palmer was stationed while he served during WWII. Following Palmer's honorable discharge from the Army in 1945, Josie and Palmer moved to Howard, SD where Palmer was employed until 1956 when they moved to Huron. Josie enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and was a devoted volunteer to several Huron organizations. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, The Catholic Daughters of America, and the VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by 4 children, Kenneth Soderberg of Huron, Connie (Harry) Mansheim of Brookings, Barbara Thomas of Anchorage, AK, and Ron (MJ Hedstrom) Soderberg of Golden Valley, MN; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren; 1 sister, Dorothy Timmons of N. St. Paul, MN; 1 sister-in-law, Dorothy Calles of Howard, SD; and 1 brother-in-law, Vern (Thelma) Soderberg of Northglenn, CO.
Josie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Palmer in 2012, 3 brothers, and 6 sisters.
