Josephine Rozendal, age 96, of Houston, TX and formerly of Huron, died Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at Willow Brook Hampton at Houston, TX. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, December 28th at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Brian Grover officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM Thursday at Trinity Cemetery at Volga, SD. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. Josephine Rozendal was born Josephine Wobbema on June 19, 1910, in Volga, SD, the ninth child of John and Emma (Vander Wal) Wobbema and the first child born in the United States after her family emigrated from Friesland in the Netherlands. She grew up on farms in the vicinity of Volga and on June 20, 1930 married Bernard Rozendal, son of Rev. Anthony and Effie (Hospers) Rozendal. After a difficult few years because of the Depression, Bernard was employed by the Soil Conservation Service in 1935; he worked for them in various locations in South Dakota until his death in 1960. Two sons were born to Bernard and Josephine, Roger and David. After the sons were grown and in college, Josephine went back to school and earned her degree in Education. After the death of Bernard, she taught in the Huron school system until she retired in 1975 after 15 years of teaching. After retirement, she was active in church work, retired teachers organizations, and volunteer activities until 1988 when she moved to Houston, Texas to be near her son, Roger. She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Huron Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, AARP, Beadle County Republican Women and Church Women United. She is survived by 2 sons, Roger (Patricia) of Houston, TX and David (Maribel) of Bastrop, TX; 5 grandchildren, Robert and Paul of San Francisco, CA, Keith of Ventura, CA, Kenneth, and Merry (Jerry) Rightmer all of Austin, TX; 2 great grandsons, Justin and Ryan Rightmer, all of Austin, TX; and 1 sister, Clara Bell of Sioux City, IA. She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard, her parents, and 11 brothers and sisters. Casket bearers will be Robert Rozendal, Paul Rozendal, Keith Rozendal, Kenneth Rozendal, Jerry Rightmer and Justin Rightmer.
