John R. Tschetter, age 94, of Hitchcock and Huron, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket. His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Welter Funeral Home with burial to follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

John R. Tschetter was born on March 24, 1927 to parents Lorenz and Suzanna (Kleinsasser) Tschetter in Lake Byron, South Dakota, the youngest of 9 children.

John married Marie B. Gross on June 5, 1948 in Mitchell, SD. John and Marie farmed in the Hitchcock area for many years. John raised cattle, pigs, and chickens, selling the eggs to buy groceries every week. They handmilked cows and sold the milk. He took great pride in keeping his equipment well maintained. He helped neighbors haul livestock to market. He was active on the township board and Republican township committee.

He is survived by his children; Karen Swanda of Huron, Reggie (Jewel) Tschetter of Huron, Teresa (Darrell) Simon of Peterson, MN; and Cheryl (Frank) Raymond of Renner; 9 grandchildren,  Jason (Tracy) Tschetter, Amy Tschetter, Angela (Matt) Hunter, Melissa (Kane) Radel, Travis (Kristen) Simon, Juston Simon, Chris Raymond, Jaimie (Jason) Cossa, and Patrick Raymond; and 9 great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jackson, Ella Tschetter, Cala, Jakeb, Ella, Landan Hunter, Kelvin Simon and Natalie Swanda; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marie, in 1996; his son-in-law, John Swanda; grandson, Brian Swanda; 5 sisters, Susanna, Justina, Ida, Rebecca, and Clara; and 3 brothers, Eli, Ed, and Ted; and several nieces and nephews.
