Obituary

John Jack Tounsley, age 68, of 173 2nd St. SW, Huron, died Monday, September 27, 2004, at McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls after a short time battling cancer. His funeral mass will be at 11:00 AM Friday, October 1, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Donald Imming officiating. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the mass at the church Friday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Avera McKennan Hospice, 800 E. 21st St., Sioux Falls, SD 57117. John Joseph Tounsley was born on January 25, 1936, to Charles and Lietha (Munger) Tounsley at Lake Preston, SD. At the age of 10 years, he moved to Huron with his father and stepmother, where he attended Wilson Public School and Huron High School. Jack worked for Montgomery Brothers at Montys Station from the age of 11 to age 19. On August 4, 1955, Jack married Marilyn Joan Marone at St. Martins Catholic Church in Huron. He worked for Gordon Hook at the 9th Street Standard Station. He moved to Cavour and farmed with his father-in-law, Dutch Marone, and brother-in-law, Ron Marone. He returned to Huron and worked for Farmers Co-op Elevator. He then moved to Houghton, SD, and was the manager of Houghton Elevator. Jack returned to Huron where he worked at Walraven Mobil Gas Station. He worked at the Red Arrow Bar for 10 years, drove school bus for the Huron Public School System for 3 years, worked at Jones Company as shop foreman or 5 years, was manager of the Huron Country Club for 4 years, and from 1979-1989, he was the owner/operator of the Sportsmen Bar in Huron. He also was a former member of the Huron Volunteer Fire Department, Hook and Ladder Company, and served in the South Dakota National Guard, 153rd Engineer Battalion of Huron. In 1999, Jack and Marilyn fulfilled their dream of RVing on a full-time basis for the last 5 years. Jack was an avid follower of NASCAR racing and another dream was fulfilled in 2002, when he attended the Daytona 500 in Dayton, OH, and the Phoenix International Raceway, with his son, Ryan, in 2003. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Huron; 4 children, Ty (Don) Kramer of Sioux Falls, Randy (Kathy) Tounsley of Huron, Bret Tounsley of Sioux Falls, and Ryan (Stevie Ann Rinehart) Tounsley of Chandler, AZ: 8 grandchildren, Julie Kramer, John Kramer, Dustin Tounsley, Brooke Tounsley, Erin Tounsley, Hanna Tounsley, Chase Tounsley, and Madison Tounsley; his step-mother, Mary Ann Tounsley of Custer, SD; 1 brother, Jerry (Marilyn) Tounsley of Custer, 2 half-brothers, Alan (Wanda) Tounsley of Billings, MT, and Gary (Diane) Tounsley of Custer; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
