John L. Schnabel, age 86, of Huron, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022 at Avantara Huron. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Welter Funeral Home with burial to follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday morning.

John was born on September 14, 1936 in Harrold, South Dakota to parents Benjamin and Mary (Nuss) Schnabel.

John married Lila Mae Wagner on June 2, 1956 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Huron. In 1960, John and Lila moved to La Puente, California. In 1963 they started an auto parts store-City Motor Auto Parts and CMP Warehouse. They retired in 1998 and moved back to Huron in 2002.

John had many hobbies including walleye fishing, pheasant hunting playing games and yardwork. He was a past member of the Moose Lodge while in West Covina, California. His favorite hobby was that of collecting classic cars and watching Nascar racing.

John is survived by three sons, Douglas (Stephanie) of Lennox, Steven (Christine) of West Covina, CA and David (Lauren) of Midlothian, VA; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Don Schnabel, Wally (Pat) Schnabel and Ben (Cherie) Schnabel; 3 sisters, Arlene Counts, Rose (LeRoy) Slepikas, and Betty Pohl; sister-in-law, Marylyn Huckins; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lila on July 18, 2022; his brother Darrell Schnabel and his sister Judy Anderson.
