Obituary

John Neiffer, age 90, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living Center in Sioux Falls.

His funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Grace Episcopal Church in Huron followed by interment at Riverside Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Huron Veteran's Council.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm with the family present from  5:30-7:00 pm on Friday, August 26th at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church.

John was born on October 9, 1925 in Alpena, SD to John and Anna (Nuss) Neiffer. He was raised on a farm until the 8th grade and then moved to Huron with his family after his father died.

John joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific Theater during WWII. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, John returned to Huron and began a long career with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.

On February 28, 1954, John married Helen Webster and together they raised two daughters, Rennie and Danelle in Huron.

John retired from the railroad after a career that spanned 43 years and 8 months. During his railroad career, John worked as a brakeman, conductor, yardman, and was the railroad union grievance officer for the last 28 years.  After retirement from the railroad, John worked for Coburns Grocery, Meals on Wheels, Bingo supervisor for the American Legion, RSVP Program, and was active at the Huron Area Senior Center including serving on its board of directors.

John was a past American Legion Post Commander, President of Golden K Kiwanis Club, active with VFW and Elks Club, and was on the Advisory Council for Farmers and Merchants Bank. John loved to golf, play cards, pheasant hunting, fishing, and going to the casinos. John stayed in his home that he helped build from 1960-2009. He then moved to the Courtyard Apartments where he lived from 2009-2014 until he moved to Sioux Falls be closer to his family because of his health.

John is survived by two daughters, Rennie (Jerry) Muhs of Hudson, FL and Danelle Hauck of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren, Jessica Muhs of Charleston, SC, Ryan (Brittany) Muhs of Brandon, SD, Alec Hauck of Brookings, and Aaron Hauck of Sioux Falls; three step-grandchildren, Jennifer (Dean) Mugianis of Tarpon Springs, FL, Jackie Muhs of Sioux Falls, and Angela (Mike) Messer of Gainesville, FL; one great-granddaughter, Everly Muhs, and two step great-grandchildren, Mason and Myleigh Messer; one brother, Alfred (Jean) Neiffer of Huron; two sisters, Martha Strub of Sommerset, SD and Elvina (Phil) Maher of Huron; one sister-in-law, Ethelyn Williams of Everett, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; four sisters; two brothers; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
