His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Monday, December 18, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call this Sunday afternoon until 5:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home, and from 6:00 to 9:00 PM this Sunday evening at the church with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM, or prior to the service at the church Monday morning. John Lee LeGrand was born on July 1, 1940, to Leo T. and Leota M. (Voorhees) LeGrand at Huron, SD. He graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1958 and attended Huron College. On December 30, 1958, John enlisted in the United States Army and was with the 68th Signal Company as a Sergeant E-5 with his interest in radar and was honorably discharged on March 14, 1962. John lived in California where he hung sheet rock for a couple of years. In 1964, John married Laura Ryan. They moved to Hitchcock where he farmed. In the early 70s he opened Johns Service Station. Later Cenex bought the station and he continued to work with them. He worked for Harvest States selling GTA feeds and was very involved with the finance division to manage and supply his customers needs. During this time John enjoyed cooking for the many bull sales his customers had. During Johns career his only goal was to always stay in close contact with his customers. To do this he drove thousands and thousands of miles. This was well proven as he had the callus on his hand that was formed to fit his steering wheel. A new challenge came to him as he turned 60. Quality Liquid Feeds had a livestock liquid feed and supplement program he knew to be his new venture in life. John truly loved family gatherings with his children, with Christmas being a very special time. He enjoyed seeing the grandkids and attended their special achievements. If he was able to cook a steak for family and friends that would make his day. On September 11, 1999, John married Donna Zell Pier in Portland, OR. They went on cruises, traveled and spent the winters in Arizona. Any time John could go golfing he was on cloud nine. The Huron Country Club was a favorite spot where he was active as a board member. During this time he instigated updates for the club such as fund raisers, and making a large flower bed and the cart path to hole #3. He valued his league golfing partners and enjoyed their many laughs. He recently cooked steaks for a hunting party at the Country Club. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and enjoyed being an usher, Elks, and American Legion. Those sharing Johns life are his wife, Donna of Huron; 2 daughters, Debbie (Tom) Cooney of Lake Andes, and Misty (Kerwin) Burton of Pierre; 1 son, John (Maggie) LeGrand Jr. of Huron; 6 grandchildren, Brandi and Brittni Burton, Ryan and JJ Cooney, and Rachel and Karter LeGrand; 2 step-daughters, Rhonda (Scott) Klinkel of Aberdeen, and Brenda (Barry) Cranston of Huron; 3 step-grandchildren, Jennifer Klinkel, Chad Klinkel and Zachary Cranston; 1 sister, LaVonne (Terry) Kambel of Battle Lake, MN; his mother-in-law, Pearl Zell of Huron; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Shirley Davies and his father-in-law, Albert Zell.
