John Gutowski, age 90, of Watertown, SD, formerly of Huron, passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Watertown. His memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Welter Funeral Home with burial of his cremated remains at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery and Military Honors by the Huron Veterans Council. Memorial visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home on Friday. John Gutowski, the son of Alex and Francine (Tryazick) Gutowski, was born on July 15, 1923, in Junction City, WI, where he attended school. John served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was honorably discharged on December 25, 1946. John worked for the Chicago Railroad. He also worked for Meyers Modernizing for 5 years and Lamperts Building Center as a yard foreman for 16 years before retiring in 1995. After his retirement, John worked as a greeter for WalMart for 6 years. John married Lavena Bell Gullet in 1944 in Clement Falls, OR. Later, John married Doris Meyers-Page on November 22, 1962 in Huron, SD. The couple lived in Huron, Montana and Watertown. John was a member of the VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776 in Huron, the American Legion William Reaves Post #7 in Huron, and the American Legion Post #17 in Watertown. He was also a member of many bowling leagues. John enjoyed fishing on the Missouri River in Ft. Thompson, SD, hunting and camping. His family was very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them and his friends. Grateful for having shared in John's life are his four sons: John (Sharon) Gutowski of Mesa, AZ, Dave (Sue) Gutowski of Dousman, WI, Gale Page of Mitchell, SD, and Robert (Denise) Gutowski of Helena, MT; four daughters: Mary Ann (Steven) Thomson of Little Suamico, WI, Jestene Barber of Black Creek, WI, Gloria (Gary Getscher) Luckett of Wolsey, SD, and Monica (Mark) LaFave of Watertown, SD; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Tony (Marion) Gutowski of Fairbanks, AK, Walter (May) Gutowski of De Perre, WI, and Richard Gutowski of Chicago, IL; brother and sister-in-law, George and Myrna Meyers, of Rapid City, SD; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Francine; his first wife, Lavena Bell; his second wife, Doris; three brothers, Ed, Frank and Roman Gutowski; four sisters; and mother and father-in-law, Ruby and Leo Meyers.
