John attended the Locust Point School through the 8 th grade. John's first job off the family farm was at a factory that made furniture in Carlisle. His next job was a civil service position at an inland Navy Depot in Mechanicsburg.

In 1943, at the age 17, John and his friend John Dunbar got the crazy idea to go west to farm with his two uncles, Harden and Pat Clouser in South Dakota. After farming with his uncles until 1947, John and Dorothy started farming south of Virgil, raising feeder cattle. In 1962 John and Dorothy purchased a farm north of Virgil. In addition to farming, John did custom haystack moving in the area. In 2014 they sold the farm and moved to Huron.

John received his amateur radio license (ham) in 1950 with the call letters WØAZJ and was a member of the Huron Amateur Radio Club. John received the Quarter Century Wireless Association 65 th Anniversary award as a distinguished member to commemorate his years of service. Talking to ham radio operators on his radio and then a computer was one of Johns favorite past times. He also enjoyed vacations to Pennsylvania, Utah, Louisiana and long drives in the country to get his banana split or 'Blizzard'. John also enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards with family and friends.

Last call for WØAZJ.
