Obituary

Jessie A. McMains, age 99, of 50 7th St. SE, Huron, died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, July 2nd at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at the Saron Cemetery at Thor, MN. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening or Monday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday afternoon. Jessie A. McMains was born Jessie Ada Bristor on April 30, 1908, to Charles and Fannie (Thompson) Bristor on a farm 9 miles south of Doland, SD. As a young girl she moved with her parents to Aberdeen where she graduated from Aberdeen High School. She played piano for the silent movies before she was married. She was a music teacher from the age of 16 until her retirement in 1987. On June 13, 1926, Jessie married Victor Larsen at Aberdeen. They lived in Bismarck, ND, where Jessie continued as a pianist for silent movies at the Capital Theater. In 1948, they moved to a farm near Aitkin, MN where they lived until Victors death in 1965. After Victors death, Jessie returned to Huron to live with her mother. Jessie was hired by Wes Peppers to teach music when Wes owned the music store in Huron. In 1966, Jessie married George McMains at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. They made their home on the Fairgrounds where George was employed as caretaker. She would play the piano for sing-a-longs at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home, the piano and organ at the Huron Nursing Home and New West, for programs at the Christian Learning Center of the American Lutheran Church, and at Prairie Crossings. Jessie had the ability to write with both hands, and could write forward with her right hand and backwards with her left hand. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the Deborah Circle, R.S.V.P, and a retired member of the Angelus Bell Choir. She is survived by 1 grandson, Lief Larsen of Huron; 1 brother, Charles Bristor of Gaithersburg, MD; 1 step-granddaughter, Gina McMains Brown and her 3 children; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her 2 husbands, Victor Larsen in 1965, and George McMains in 1973; and her son Grant Larsen in January 2007.
